Meet Colby: First-Generation Mississippi Rancher

I want to be a cattleman.

That simple dream became the foundation of Culbertson Cattle Co. But being business-minded, I knew this had to be financially sustainable to serve families for years to come. What followed was a 3 year crash course in an industry that frustrated me at every turn.

What I Found in the Cattle Industry

The traditional cattle business operates in ways that keep consumers in the dark. Go to any grocery store and ask about the beef. They can't tell you what ranch it came from, how the cattle were raised, what they ate, or who cared for them.

This disconnect became the problem I needed to solve.

I discovered an industry full of middlemen and bureaucracy, all profiting while families stay in the dark about their food. The solution was clear: cut out the system entirely. Sell directly to people who want to know their rancher and understand where their beef comes from.

How We're Different

At Culbertson Cattle Co., transparency isn't marketing talk. It's how we operate.

The majority of our beef comes from cattle raised right here on our pastures along the Bogue Chitto River. They spend their lives on grass before being grain-finished for optimal flavor and marbling. No hormones. No antibiotics. When demand exceeds our ranch capacity, we source from a trusted partner ranch in Missouri that I've personally visited and verified. They raise registered Black Angus cattle using the exact same practices. Every animal, whether from our pastures or our partner's, meets the same standards.

But transparency also means being honest about what we do. These animals are raised to feed families. I don't hide from that reality. I believe deeply that every animal under my care deserves the highest quality of life possible, and I'm not willing to sacrifice their health and well-being just to make money.

What Ranch Life Actually Looks Like

When the sun comes up, I'm already in the pastures with my eight dogs trailing behind me. They follow me across every acre as I check fence lines, monitor water sources, and move cattle to fresh grass. This happens seven days a week, 365 days a year.

This hands-on approach means I know each pasture's condition, which cattle are thriving, and how weather affects grazing. It's the kind of attention that only comes from being present every single day, walking the land and understanding how animals, grass, and soil work together.

The beef from our ranch comes from cattle I've personally cared for every day. When we source from our partner operation, I've walked their land, met their cattle, and verified they raise animals the same way I do. No hired managers on our ranch. No absentee ownership. Whether the beef comes from our pastures or our verified partner, it meets the same standard: registered Black Angus, grass-fed and grain-finished, no hormones, no antibiotics.

Building Something That Lasts

My wife Caroline and I are raising our daughter on this ranch, building something that can serve families for generations. The vision extends beyond our current operation. Maybe one day it's more animals, larger pastures, that 2,000-acre Montana ranch I think about. But right now, it's about proving that families don't have to accept mystery meat from grocery stores.

I often think about Alan Jackson's song "Little Man," about small businesses standing against corporate giants. That's what this is. By selling direct to you, I bypass both the traditional cattle industry bureaucracy and the retail chains that dominate our food system. It's harder this way. It requires more investment, more patience, more relationship-building. But it lets me maintain complete control over quality while connecting directly with the families who trust me to provide their beef.
